August 2018 through August 2019

2018-19 Season

Manoa Valley Theatre has announced its play selections for the theatre’s 50th Anniversary Season. A very special lineup has been put together.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Manoa Valley Theatre’s first half century!” MVT producing director, Dwight Martin, proudly stated in making the announcement. “So many people have contributed to our history and have been responsible for catapulting us from our humble launch in 1969 to our cornerstone position in Hawaii’s performing arts community in 2019. It’s extraordinary to consider this company’s artistic evolution, and a privilege to celebrate its achievement of entertaining Hawaii for fifty years.”

“The 2018-19 Season has been specially crafted to honor the theatre’s past with four of our most popular and greatest hits, as well as to honor our community with two extraordinary dramatic premieres that have specific impact to Hawaii and its citizens,” he continued. “We’re equally enthused about the tremendous talent embodied by our guest directing team.”

The 50th Anniversary six-play season runs from August 2018 to August 2019.

Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding

– By Nancy Cassaro and Artificial Intelligence
– Guest directed by R. Kevin Doyle

One of the longest running shows in Off Broadway history, this delightful evening gives new meaning to the phrase “And now for something completely different!” Audience members are the guests at the nuptial celebration of Tony Nunzio and Valentina Vitale in all its tacky and hilarious glory. Following the brief service is a reception where the audience joins the wedding party and their bickering families for a pasta dinner, champagne toasts, wedding cake and dancing to a five piece band.

“We’ve seen the future of theatre and it is wild! Off Broadway’s most innovative play satirizes a garish New York Italian wedding, and it’s more fun when the audience joins in!” – Glamour Magazine
“You don’t have to be Italian to understand the clichés lampooned.” – New York Daily News

The Rocky Horror Show

– A musical comedy sci-fi fantasy by Richard O’Brien
– Guest directed by Rob Duval
– Guest musical directed by Jenny Shiroma

One fateful night, Brad Majors and his fiancée, Janet Weiss — a wholesome and utterly normal young couple in love — innocently set out to visit an old professor. Unfortunately for them, this night out is destined to be one they will never forget. A thunderstorm and a flat-tire force them to seek help at the castle of Dr. Frank ’N’ Furter, an alien, transvestite scientist with a manic genius and insatiable libido. Brad, Janet, and Frank ’N’ Furter’s cohorts are swept up into the scientist’s latest experiment. The night’s misadventures will cause Brad and Janet to question everything they’ve known about themselves, each other, love, and lust. A loving homage to the classic B sci-fi film and horror genres with an irresistible rock’n’roll score, The Rocky Horror Show is a hilarious, wild ride that no audience will soon forget.

“A socko wacko weirdo rock concert.” – WNBC TV
“A musical that deals with mutating identity and time warps (is) one of the most mutated, time-warped phenomena in show business.” – The New York Times
