2018-19 Season

Manoa Valley Theatre has announced its play selections for the theatre’s 50th Anniversary Season. A very special lineup has been put together.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Manoa Valley Theatre’s first half century!” MVT producing director, Dwight Martin, proudly stated in making the announcement. “So many people have contributed to our history and have been responsible for catapulting us from our humble launch in 1969 to our cornerstone position in Hawaii’s performing arts community in 2019. It’s extraordinary to consider this company’s artistic evolution, and a privilege to celebrate its achievement of entertaining Hawaii for fifty years.”

“The 2018-19 Season has been specially crafted to honor the theatre’s past with four of our most popular and greatest hits, as well as to honor our community with two extraordinary dramatic premieres that have specific impact to Hawaii and its citizens,” he continued. “We’re equally enthused about the tremendous talent embodied by our guest directing team.”

The 50th Anniversary six-play season runs from August 2018 to August 2019.

Avenue Q

– A musical comedy by Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty
– Guest directed by Ahnya Chang
– Guest musical directed by Jenny Shiroma
– Tony Award-winning “Best Musical” 2016

Part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, this laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad who, with new neighborhood friends on New York’s Avenue Q, struggles to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Addressing humorous adult issues, and filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention puppets, the show is similar to a beloved children’s television show and offers a place where puppets are friends, Monsters are good and life lessons are learned.

Allegiance tells the story of one family’s extraordinary journey in a troubling time of a nation at war. A mysterious envelope leads Sam Kimura back 60 years to a time when he and his sister Kei strive to save their family from the wrongful imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Sam enlists in the army to prove his family’s loyalty, while Kei joins the draft resisters fighting for the rights of their people. Their paths take them from the lush farmlands of California to the wastelands of Wyoming to the battlefields of Europe, and their divided loyalties threaten to tear them apart forever. But as long-lost memories are relived and a new perspective is gained, Sam finds that it is never too late to forgive and experience the redemptive power of love.

Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding

– By Nancy Cassaro and Artificial Intelligence
– Guest directed by R. Kevin Doyle

One of the longest running shows in Off Broadway history, this delightful evening gives new meaning to the phrase “And now for something completely different!” Audience members are the guests at the nuptial celebration of Tony Nunzio and Valentina Vitale in all its tacky and hilarious glory. Following the brief service is a reception where the audience joins the wedding party and their bickering families for a pasta dinner, champagne toasts, wedding cake and dancing to a five piece band.

“We’ve seen the future of theatre and it is wild! Off Broadway’s most innovative play satirizes a garish New York Italian wedding, and it’s more fun when the audience joins in!” – Glamour Magazine
“You don’t have to be Italian to understand the clichés lampooned.” – New York Daily News

The Rocky Horror Show

– A musical comedy sci-fi fantasy by Richard O’Brien
– Guest directed by Rob Duval
– Guest musical directed by Jenny Shiroma

One fateful night, Brad Majors and his fiancée, Janet Weiss — a wholesome and utterly normal young couple in love — innocently set out to visit an old professor. Unfortunately for them, this night out is destined to be one they will never forget. A thunderstorm and a flat-tire force them to seek help at the castle of Dr. Frank ’N’ Furter, an alien, transvestite scientist with a manic genius and insatiable libido. Brad, Janet, and Frank ’N’ Furter’s cohorts are swept up into the scientist’s latest experiment. The night’s misadventures will cause Brad and Janet to question everything they’ve known about themselves, each other, love, and lust. A loving homage to the classic B sci-fi film and horror genres with an irresistible rock’n’roll score, The Rocky Horror Show is a hilarious, wild ride that no audience will soon forget.
